An l8
century Rajput leader, Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh III, and
Bengali architect, Vidyadhar Chakraborty built this wailed
city of Jaipur. This walled city was painted pink for the
visit of Prince Albert, in 1856 and, thereafter, was referred
to as the “Pink-City’, The walled Pink City remains Jaipur’s
commercial and cultural centre complete with palaces, temples,
museums, crowded markets and congested streets. This rich
heritage of India can also be seen in stain glass art form.
One of the leading stain glass artist of India is Pushpendra
Singh Rathore, the guide from the bedazzling, regal city of
Jaipur. As a child, he was fascinated by the windows of
colorful glass in their haveli. When he pecked through those
shimmering stained glass windows of brilliant reds, greens
blues and yellows he would have a glimmer of the beguiling
stream of life outside. |

The Amber Fort-Palace which
stands like a massive, silent guard over the Pink City, is one
of the three Garland Forts which occupy the hilltops, just
outside of Jaipur. Some of the glass, that was damaged, removed
or stolen has been replaced with colored glass since last six
years by Pushpendra Singh Rathore.
In 1994 Rathore initiated the
restoration of the glass panel designs of the Sheesh Mahal For
one panel, he first copied a pattern of the Ganesh, which is
named for the figure of the elephant, on an aluminium sheet
and experimented with the placement of his glass in a colorful
mosaic to complete the Ganesh design Then he challenged
himself to produce work better than what was in the original
Sheesh Mahal. He went on to improve and redesign two other
panels for the Sheesh Mahal, It took Rathore over 75 days of
working, nine to ten hours per day, to complete one panel. His
diligence, expertise, and enthusiasm have been driven by his
desire, firstly, to preserve the art form made famous in the
past by the Rajputs and, secondly, to create new designs and
to adapt methods to build stained glass designs.
